It builds up quietly, year after year, until a heating element or a valve gives up on you.

What the minerals actually do inside your machines
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. Heat that water, or let it sit, and those minerals drop out and stick to metal. In a water heater they blanket the bottom of the tank. In a dishwasher they coat the heating element and plug the little spray arm holes, and in a washer they build up in the valve screens until the fill slows to a crawl. Scale acts like a jacket. The element has to run hotter and longer to do the same job, and heat is what kills electrical parts. Ice makers get it too. A thin crust on the fill tube turns into a frozen block.
The habit that prevents most of it
Run a descaling cycle. That's it. For a dishwasher, set a cup of plain white vinegar in a bowl on the top rack and run a hot cycle with nothing else inside. A citric-acid dishwasher cleaner from the grocery store works too, just follow the box. For a washing machine, use the tub-clean cycle if it has one, or a hot empty wash with washer cleaner. Coffee maker and kettle: vinegar and water, then two rinses. Once a month, pull the dishwasher's bottom filter, rinse it under the tap, twist it back in. No tools, no panels.
How often, honestly
On municipal water in town, every three months is plenty. On a well, and plenty of our customers out the hollow roads are on wells, make it monthly. If white crust shows up on the faucet aerator within a few weeks of you cleaning it, you're on the monthly schedule. Water heaters are different. Draining a few gallons off the bottom drain valve once a year flushes loose sediment out before it hardens. If you've never done it and the heater is old, leave it alone and ask us first. A stuck valve on a rusty tank can turn into a flood.
Signs prevention time has passed
Listen to the water heater. Popping, rumbling, or a sound like gravel in a bucket means sediment is baked onto the bottom. Dishes coming out gritty after a full cycle with clean filters usually means plugged spray arm holes or a weak wash pump. A washer that takes forever to fill often has scaled valve screens, and an ice maker turning out hollow, half-formed cubes is fighting a restricted fill line. Rusty streaks in the dishwasher tub mean the coating cracked and the metal underneath is exposed. At that point cleaning won't reverse anything. A part needs replaced.
When to call us

Will a water softener fix appliances that are already scaled up?
It stops new buildup and slowly helps some existing deposits, but it won't bring back a burned-out element or a pitted tub. A softener belongs in place before the damage, not as a repair after.
Is vinegar safe for my dishwasher?
Once in a while, in a bowl on the top rack, it's fine. Don't pour it in the detergent cup, and don't do it every week. Repeated acid exposure is hard on rubber seals over the years.
Does hard water hurt the refrigerator too?
Mainly the ice maker and the water dispenser. Minerals narrow the fill tube and coat the filter faster than normal. Change the water filter on schedule and watch for cubes coming out small or hollow.
