What "runs but doesn't heat" actually means
A microwave has two separate jobs. One side runs the lights, fan, and turntable. The other side makes the actual heat. Those systems use different parts and different voltages. When the first side works and the second doesn't, the heating circuit has lost something — a switch, a fuse-style protector, or the tube that makes the microwaves. Your food is just sitting in a warm, well-lit box with a spinning plate. That's why the symptom feels so odd. It sounds healthy. This also means the fix is usually a specific part, not the whole appliance. But finding out which part is not a guessing game you want to play yourself.
Usual suspect one: the door switches
Every microwave has small switches that confirm the door is fully latched. If one fails or the latch gets sloppy, the oven often still lights and spins but refuses to make heat. It's a safety design working as intended. Doors get abused. Kids swing them. Something heavy in the door pocket bends the frame slightly. In older farmhouse kitchens we also see cabinets that shifted and now put pressure on a built-in unit's door frame. This is on the cheaper end of the repair range and one of the more common things we find. It's also a common false alarm — the switch may be fine and the latch just needs alignment.
Usual suspect two: control board and timer logic
The board decides when to call for heat. If a relay on the board sticks open, or the touchpad sends garbled signals, the oven can run its whole cycle and never energize the heating side. Signs pointing this way: the display acts strange, buttons need pressing twice, or the unit heats sometimes and not others. Power quality plays into this on hollow roads where the line dips and surges. We see boards on rural circuits fail earlier than boards in town. Same with older wiring that shares a microwave with a fridge or a well pump on one overworked branch circuit.
Usual suspect three: the high-voltage heating parts
This is the magnetron and the components feeding it — a transformer, a diode, and a capacitor. When these fail, the microwave usually runs perfectly and heats nothing at all, no partial warming. Sometimes there's a buzzing or a smell. Understand this clearly: this section holds a stored charge that remains dangerous after unplugging. It can hurt you badly. Do not open the cabinet. Do not follow a video that tells you to. This is the entire reason we bring discharge tools and meters. If your unit is over the counter and the food is stone cold every single time, this is where we start looking.

Safe for you: run a cup of water for one minute and feel it. Check that the door latches with a clean click and no wobble. Look for food buildup on the latch. Reset the breaker once. Make sure the outlet isn't on a stressed circuit with other appliances. That's the whole list. What we do differently: discharge the capacitor, then test each part in the heating chain with a meter, check voltage at the outlet under load, and inspect the waveguide cover for burn-through.
