Electric Cooktop Element Not Heating
You turn the knob. The light comes on. Nothing gets hot. Or one burner heats and the other three sit cold. Maybe it glows for a minute, then quits mid-dinner. A dead element on an electric cooktop is usually one of a handful of things, and most of them are repairable. Here's how we trace it.

What a Cold Element Is Actually Telling You
An electric element is simple. Power comes in, resistance wire heats up, a switch or control decides how long the power stays on. So a cold element means one of three things: no power reaching it, a broken heating wire inside it, or a control that never sent the signal. Which one it is depends on the pattern. One burner dead while others work points at that burner. All four dead points upstream, at the power feed or the main control. Glows then quits points at heat cycling or a loose connection getting hot and letting go.
Start With the Cheapest Cause: Connection and Element
On coil-top ranges, the element plugs into a receptacle under the drip pan. Spills, boilovers, and years of heat cycling burn those contacts. The prongs get pitted. The element wiggles loose and stops making solid contact. That's the most common fix we make on coil tops, and it's a part swap. The element itself can also open up inside — the wire breaks and nothing gets through, no visible damage at all. On smooth tops the element is under glass and can't be reseated, but the same failure happens: the coil opens and the burner goes dead cold.
Switches, Controls, and Older Farmhouse Wiring
The infinite switch behind each knob does the on-off cycling. Contacts inside it pit and weld or stop closing. A burner that only works on high, or that clicks but never heats, often lands here. Touch-control smooth tops use a control board and relays instead, and a stuck relay behaves the same way. Then there's the feed. A lot of houses out our way run on older panels and long runs of aluminum wire. A loose lug or a half-tripped double-pole breaker can kill two burners and leave two working. We see that on hollow-road houses more than most folks would guess.
Safe Checks You Can Do Right Now
Unplug the range or flip its breaker before you touch anything. On a coil top, lift the element straight out and look at the prongs and the receptacle — black scorch marks, melted plastic, or a prong that's burned thin all tell a story. Swap a known-good element of the same size into the dead position. If it heats, you found the problem. Check that the breaker is fully off and fully back on, not just resting in the middle. Look for a bubbled or cracked spot on smooth-top glass over the dead zone. Stop there. Don't pull the back panel or probe terminals.
What We Do That You Can't From the Kitchen Floor
We meter it. With power isolated, we read resistance across the element to see if the coil is open or shorted. Then we check the receptacle terminals and the switch contacts under load, so we can tell a bad switch from a bad element instead of guessing. On smooth tops we get under the cooktop to inspect ribbon connections and the control board for heat damage. Can I just replace a coil element myself?
Often yes, if the receptacle is clean and undamaged. Unplug the range first, match the size and prong style, and seat it firmly. If the receptacle is scorched or loose, that needs replacing too — that's a wired repair.
Why do two burners work and two don't?
That pattern usually points to a power problem, not the burners. Electric ranges run on two hot legs. Lose one — a tripped half of the breaker, a loose panel lug — and roughly half the cooktop goes dead.
My smooth top glows red then shuts off. Bad element?
Maybe not. Smooth tops cycle by design to hold temperature, so some blinking is normal. If it quits and stays cold, we'd suspect a limit switch, a failing element, or a loose connection under the glass.
