Gas Smell From the Stove or Oven
You walked into the kitchen and something smelled off. Like rotten eggs, or a whiff of sulfur near the range. Maybe it fades, maybe it doesn't. Either way, your stomach drops. A gas smell is not something to sit on and wonder about. Here is what we tell folks to do, in order, before anyone touches a burner knob again.

Do these things right now, in this order
1. Turn off every burner knob and the oven. Check that no knob is sitting between settings. 2. Open windows and an exterior door. Let air move through the room. 3. Get people and pets out of the kitchen. Kids and older folks first. 4. Sniff at the floor and low corners too. Propane sinks and pools low. 5. If the smell is faint and clears in a few minutes, it may have been an unlit burner or a pilot that blew out. 6. If the smell stays, or gets stronger, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside. That call comes before ours.
What not to do while you smell gas
Skip the light switches. Don't flip anything on or off, including the range hood or a ceiling fan. A switch makes a tiny spark you'll never see. No matches, no lighters, no candles. Not even to test a burner. Leave the garage door opener alone. Same with the doorbell. Don't unplug the range or reach behind it. Pulling a plug can spark. Never try to tighten a gas fitting or move the flex line yourself. That's utility and licensed work, not homeowner work. And don't run a fan to clear the room. Open windows instead and let it vent on its own.
When to walk out and shut things down
Strong smell, hissing sound, or a headache and dizziness means go. Everyone outside, up the driveway, away from the house. Call the gas company from there. If you have propane and know where the tank shutoff is, and you can reach it safely from outside, turn it off. If you have to hunt for it or crawl anywhere, don't. Just leave. We get plenty of calls off long hollow roads where response takes a while. Waiting outside is still the right move. Cold beats a gas-filled kitchen every time. Don't go back in until the utility says it's clear.
Utility first, then us
The gas utility handles the line coming into your home, the meter, and the shutoff. They come out for suspected leaks and they don't charge you to check. Call them any time the smell doesn't go away. We handle the appliance itself. Once the utility clears the house, that's when we step in: an igniter that clicks but won't light, a burner that leaks by after you shut it, a safety valve that isn't closing, an oven that smells like gas before it fires. Why older kitchens around here smell gas more often
Lots of homes we work in have a range that got moved for flooring or a fridge swap, and the flex connector took a bend it shouldn't have. That shows up as a smell months later. Older farmhouse kitchens often have the range on a circuit shared with something else. When power hiccups, an electric igniter can fail to spark while gas still flows for a second. You smell that. Hard, mineral-heavy water doesn't touch the gas side, but the same age that gives you crusty burner ports gives you a sloppy oven seal. Ports clog, flames go lazy, and the room smells unburned.

A brief whiff as the igniter catches can happen. It should clear in seconds. If it lingers, repeats, or you smell gas with the oven off, stop using it and call the gas utility.
Can I use my stovetop if only the oven smells?
We'd rather you didn't. The oven and burners share a gas manifold inside the range. Until someone confirms where the smell comes from, shut the whole appliance down.
