What Happens When Nobody Touches It
Food bits collect in the filter basket. Grease coats the mesh. Water still gets through, but it gets through dirty. That dirty water sprays back onto your dishes, which is why the glasses look cloudy and the silverware feels sandy. Over months, the buildup packs solid. The pump has to pull harder through a clogged screen. Around here, hard well water adds a second layer — mineral scale bakes onto the mesh and holds the grease in place. The Habit That Stops All Of It
Open the door. Pull the bottom rack all the way out. Look at the floor of the tub — you'll see a round cap, usually with an arrow or a little handle. Twist it counterclockwise a quarter turn and lift. Under it there's a flat screen that also lifts free on most models. Rinse both under hot tap water. Use an old toothbrush and a drop of dish soap on the mesh. No tools, no panels, no bleach. Set them back, twist the cap until it locks. Two minutes. Check your owner's manual if the cap doesn't budge — a few models don't come apart.
How Often Is Often Enough
Once a month covers most families. If you scrape plates and rarely run heavy loads, every couple months is fine. Cook a lot? Rinse less? Feed a full house? Make it every two weeks. There's a simple test — pull the filter and look. Clean mesh means you can stretch it. Sludge or a film you can scratch off means you waited too long. Also glance at the tub floor while you're down there. Broken glass, fruit stickers, and pieces of plastic wrap end up sitting on the screen and don't belong there. Pick those out by hand.
Signs Prevention Won't Fix It Anymore
Standing water in the bottom after a finished cycle means the drain path is restricted, not just the filter. A smell that returns within a day of cleaning points to buildup deeper in the hose or sump. Dishes on the top rack coming out dry-dirty usually means the spray arm holes are plugged with the same debris. Add a grinding noise during the wash, or a cycle that quits early and blinks a code, and you're past housekeeping. Those are pump, drain, and valve problems.
