Dryer Vent Cleaning

If your dryer takes two cycles to finish a load, the vent line is the reason about nine times out of ten, and clearing it is where to start. The clothes come out warm and damp, nothing sounds broken, nothing smells burnt. It changed slowly enough that you never noticed the day it started. Here's what we see out on service calls.

What lint does to a vent line over the years

Lint doesn't arrive all at once. A little slips past the screen every load and sticks to the duct wall, and damp air makes it cling. Over a few years that fuzz builds into a felt lining, and the pipe gets narrower without ever fully blocking. Now your dryer has to push hot, wet air through a smaller hole. So it runs longer. The heating element or gas burner cycles more, and parts wear out sooner than they should. Around here, long runs through crawlspaces and out the side of an older farmhouse make it worse, because the air cools and drops its moisture before it ever gets outside.

The five-minute habit that prevents most of it

Clean the lint screen every single load. Not most loads. Every one. Then once a month, pull the screen out and rinse it under warm water with a drop of dish soap. Fabric softener sheets leave an invisible film on that mesh that air can't pass through, and if water pools on the screen instead of running straight through, the film is there. While you're at it, step outside and look at the vent hood. It should flap open when the dryer runs. If it's stuck shut or packed with lint, clear it by hand with the dryer off.

How often the full duct needs cleaning

For most households, once a year is the right rhythm. Pick a month you'll remember, like the same weekend you change smoke detector batteries. Some homes need it more often. A big family running loads daily will pack a line up faster, and so will a household with a shedding dog or a vent run longer than about fifteen feet with several elbows. Those we'd check every six months. Short, straight runs out a nearby wall can sometimes stretch a little longer. If you've never had it done and you can't remember the house being new, do it now and start the clock from there.

Signs prevention is already too late

Clothes still damp after a full cycle is the first one. The outside of the dryer feeling hot to the touch is another. A laundry room that turns into a sauna while the dryer runs means the moist air isn't leaving the house. Watch for a burnt or scorched smell, or lint showing up on the floor behind the machine. If the vent hood outside barely puffs when the dryer is going, the line is choked. With any of these, stop using the dryer for heavy loads and get the duct cleared. Don't pull panels or poke at anything electrical yourself.

When it isn't the vent after all

Sometimes we clear a duct and the dryer still runs cold or takes forever. Then we're looking at a heating element, a thermostat that trips early, a bad thermal fuse, or a blower wheel that's lost its grip on the shaft. Those all mimic a clogged vent. A worn belt or shot drum rollers can make the tumble slow enough that clothes don't dry evenly. We work on all major brands as an independent shop, and we'll tell you straight if the fix is a cleaning or a part. Call us and describe what the dryer is doing.

Dryer Vent Cleaning — fast answers

Can I clean the vent myself?

A short, straight run to an outside wall is doable with a brush kit and a shop vac. Unplug the dryer first. Long runs, roof vents, or ducts inside walls are worth handing off to someone with the right rods.

Does a rigid metal duct still need cleaning?

Yes. Rigid metal builds lint slower than flexible foil or plastic because the wall is smooth, but it still builds. Annual cleaning applies. Rigid metal is the safer material, so keep it if you have it.

Will cleaning the vent fix long dry times for good?

Usually it helps a lot. If cycle times stay long after a clear duct, the problem is inside the machine, like a weak heating element or a failing thermostat. That part needs a technician.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call us or fill out the form and describe the noise, the smell, or the puddle. Brand and model help a lot. We ask a few questions so the van carries the right parts before we ever pull in.

  2. Step 2

    We come find you

Gravel drive, creek crossing, farm lane off a county route, give us a landmark and we'll get there. We text before we head out, so nobody sits by the window all day waiting.

  3. Step 3

    Diagnose, then repair

We open the machine, test the part, and show you what failed. You hear the plan before any work starts. Common parts ride with us, so many jobs finish on the same visit.

Why homeowners call us

  • Coal-country water eats machinesHard water and iron leave scale on heaters, valves, and pumps. Dishwashers film over and washers clog. We see it every week, and we clean or replace the parts that mineral buildup actually ruins.
  • Old farmhouse wiring, respectedPlenty of homes here run on two-prong outlets and panels older than the appliance. Low voltage and shared circuits cause faults that people blame on the machine. We check the power before condemning a board.
  • Mike's name on the truckThis is a small workshop, not a call center. The person who answers the phone knows the tech who shows up. If something isn't right after we leave, call us and you reach us directly.
  • Independent on every brandWe work on refrigerators, ranges, washers, dryers, dishwashers, and freezers from all major makers. No brand tells us what to recommend. Sometimes the honest answer is that a repair isn't worth doing.
  • All major brands, gas & electricWhirlpool, Samsung, LG, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and more, as an independent repair company.
  • Straight answersWhen a repair doesn't make sense, we tell you, sometimes before we even roll a truck.
