Dryer Taking Two Cycles

If your dryer needs two cycles to dry one load of towels, the problem is usually airflow, not heat. That's not your imagination and it isn't normal. The heat is probably fine, but the wet air has nowhere to go. Here's how we sort it out, first over the phone and then in your laundry room.

What Two Cycles Is Actually Telling You

A dryer heats air, pushes it through the clothes, then shoves that damp air outside. If the pushing-out part is choked, the heat stays and so does the moisture. Clothes come out hot and clammy, and the drum feels like a sauna. That's the tell we listen for. If clothes came out cold and wet instead, we'd be thinking about the heat source rather than airflow. Hot and slow almost always means restricted venting somewhere between the back of the machine and the outside wall. In older farmhouses around here, that run can be long, crushed, or packed with thirty years of lint.

Cause One: The Vent Run Itself

Start here, because it's the cheapest thing to check and the most common thing we find. Flexible foil duct behind the dryer gets crushed when somebody shoves the machine back against the wall. Add a couple of sharp elbows and lint packs in fast. Long runs through a crawlspace or up through a coal-country basement collect moisture, and damp lint turns into a felt lining. The exterior flap is another suspect. Bird nests, fabric softener residue, or a flap frozen shut in January will all block the exit. We've pulled solid lint plugs the size of a loaf of bread out of a wall cap. Clear that and dry times often drop back to one cycle.

Cause Two: Lint Screen And Internal Blockage

Fabric softener sheets leave an invisible film on the lint screen. The screen looks clean and air still can't get through it. The other problem is lint that gets past the screen and builds up in the housing below, in the blower area, and around the internal ducting. That's not a homeowner job, but we run into it constantly. An overloaded drum will do it too, keeping clothes packed so tight that air never reaches the middle of the bundle. Big comforters and heavy quilts are notorious for it. If large loads dry slow and small loads are fine, we look at load size and internal airflow first.

Cause Three: Heat And Controls

If the vent is genuinely clear and dry times are still doubled, we move to the heating side. A weak element, a partly failed gas valve coil, or a thermostat cycling early will all give you lukewarm air. On electric dryers in older homes, a single blown leg in the 240-volt supply is a classic. The drum spins, the panel lights up, and there's no real heat. We see it with aging farmhouse panels and worn cords. Moisture sensors can misread too. A grounded or filmed sensor bar tells the control the load is dry when it isn't. All of that means meters and panels off, so it's our work, not yours.

Safe Checks You Can Do Right Now, And What We Do Differently

Safe for you: pull the lint screen and hold it under running water. If water beads and sits on top of it, scrub it with dish soap and a soft brush. Then go outside and watch the vent cap while the dryer runs. You should feel strong warm air. Weak or none means a blockage. Pull the dryer out a few inches and look for a crushed duct, and unplug it first if you're reaching behind. That's where you stop. We take the back panel off, meter the element and thermostats, check airflow with a gauge instead of a hand, scope the full vent run, and pull the blower housing to clear packed lint. Call us and we'll talk through what you're seeing.

Dryer Taking Two Cycles — fast answers

Can a clogged vent actually be dangerous?

Yes. Packed lint is fuel sitting next to a heat source, and a blocked gas dryer can back up combustion byproducts. It also cooks the dryer's own parts. That's why we treat long dry times as a real problem instead of an annoyance.

How often should the vent be cleaned?

Once a year suits most homes. Sooner if you've got a long run, several elbows, a big family, or pets. Homes with basement or crawlspace routing collect damp lint faster, so those need checking more often.

Is it worth repairing an older dryer?

Often, yes. Airflow problems and single failed parts are usually straightforward fixes on a machine that's otherwise sound. We'll tell you what we find and what shape the rest of it is in, then you decide.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call us or fill out the form and describe the noise, the smell, or the puddle. Brand and model help a lot. We ask a few questions so the van carries the right parts before we ever pull in.

  2. Step 2

    We come find you

Gravel drive, creek crossing, farm lane off a county route, give us a landmark and we'll get there. We text before we head out, so nobody sits by the window all day waiting.

  3. Step 3

    Diagnose, then repair

We open the machine, test the part, and show you what failed. You hear the plan before any work starts. Common parts ride with us, so many jobs finish on the same visit.

Why homeowners call us

  • Coal-country water eats machinesHard water and iron leave scale on heaters, valves, and pumps. Dishwashers film over and washers clog. We see it every week, and we clean or replace the parts that mineral buildup actually ruins.
  • Old farmhouse wiring, respectedPlenty of homes here run on two-prong outlets and panels older than the appliance. Low voltage and shared circuits cause faults that people blame on the machine. We check the power before condemning a board.
  • Mike's name on the truckThis is a small workshop, not a call center. The person who answers the phone knows the tech who shows up. If something isn't right after we leave, call us and you reach us directly.
