Age matters, but not the way you'd think
A dryer is a simple machine. Motor, heat source, drum, belt, blower, and that's most of it. We've fixed units older than the newest wiring in the house and they run fine afterward. So age by itself doesn't condemn a dryer. How it's been treated matters more. A dryer vented into a long, crushed run of flex duct has been cooking itself for years, and bearings, belts and heating elements all wear faster in that setup. A twelve-year-old machine with a clean vent and a dry laundry room is often worth fixing. A six-year-old one that's been overheating may not be.
The fault itself tells most of the story
Some failures are routine. Belts, rollers, idler pulleys, thermal fuses, door switches and heating elements are all common wear parts, and those repairs make sense on most machines. Other faults are heavier. A seized motor, a cracked drum, a rusted-through blower housing, or a burned main control board on an older model changes the math. We also look at whether one failure caused another. A blown thermal fuse is rarely the real problem, because something restricted airflow first. Replace the fuse, ignore the vent, and you'll be calling us again. We'd rather find the cause once.
Can we still get the part
This is the quiet one that decides a lot of calls. Manufacturers stop making parts for older models. Common wear items stay available a long time because they're shared across many machines, while model-specific electronics and molded plastic pieces disappear first. When a part is discontinued, we sometimes find a good used or aftermarket equivalent. Sometimes we don't. If the only part that fixes your dryer hasn't been made in years, we'll say so instead of stringing you along on a special order that never arrives. That's a straight no, and it saves you waiting.
What we actually do during the visit
We start with what you've noticed. No heat, no tumble, a loud rumble, long dry times, or shutting off early, and each of those points a different direction. Then we check the easy things: power at the outlet, the vent run, the lint path. Older farmhouses around here often have a laundry circuit that's been added onto over decades, and a weak connection can look exactly like a dead dryer. Once we know the failed component, we tell you what it takes to fix it and whether we'd do the same on our own machine. If it isn't worth it, we say that out loud.
When we tell you to buy new
There are honest cases. A stacked or compact unit with a failed control board and no parts available is one. A drum with cracks around the seam is another. If a machine has had three unrelated failures in a short stretch, that usually means everything else is close behind. Water damage or long-term rust from a damp basement counts too. And if a repair runs a real fraction of a comparable new machine on a unit that's already tired, we'll tell you. We'd rather you remember us next time than sell you a fix that fails in a season. Often it's airflow, not the dryer. A crushed or clogged vent run traps moisture, so clear the lint path first. If it still won't dry, the heating element or a thermostat may have failed, and both are common repairs.
Should I fix a dryer if the matching washer still works?
Usually yes. Matching sets are cosmetic, not mechanical, and nothing about the washer depends on the dryer. Repair the dryer on its own merits and keep the washer running until it gives you a reason not to.
Is a loud squealing dryer dangerous?
It's usually a worn drum roller, belt or idler pulley, so mechanical rather than a fire risk on its own. Keep the vent clear anyway. Ignore the noise long enough and the belt can break and strand the load mid-cycle.
