What the ice is actually telling you
Frost is moisture, plain and simple. Every time humid room air touches a cold coil or a cold wall, it condenses and freezes. A healthy freezer only sees that air for a second when you open the door, and the automatic defrost cycle melts what collects. So heavy ice means one of two stories. Either too much moist air is getting in, or the defrost cycle isn't clearing what does get in. Where the ice sits tells you a lot. Frost on the back panel points at defrost, frost near the door or the front edges points at sealing, and ice under the drawers often means a clogged drain.
Start with the door and the gasket
This is the cheapest cause and the one we find most in older homes. The rubber gasket around the door hardens over the years. It cracks, flattens, or pulls loose at a corner, and then you've got a slow leak of humid air that never stops. Overloading does it too. A jug or a box holding the door a quarter inch open all night will build serious frost by morning. Around here we also see uneven floors in older farmhouses, so the door never quite swings shut on its own. Check whether the freezer sits level and whether that door closes with a solid thump.
The defrost system and the drain line
Most freezers heat the coil briefly a few times a day to melt frost, then send the water down a drain to a pan by the compressor. Several parts can break that chain: the defrost heater, the sensor watching coil temperature, the control board, or the timer. When one quits, ice grows on the back panel until it blocks airflow. Then the fresh food side warms up too, which is why folks often call us about two problems at once. A plugged drain is a different animal. The water melts off fine, but it freezes in a sheet at the bottom instead of draining out.
Safe checks you can do right now
Close the door on a dollar bill or a strip of paper and tug. If it slides out with no drag, the gasket is weak right there. Wipe the gasket down with warm soapy water, because sticky crumbs will keep it from sealing. Look for a jar or a bag blocking the door, and make sure nothing is covering the air vents inside. Check that the freezer isn't set colder than it needs to be. If the ice is thick, unplug the unit and let it thaw with towels down. Stop there. Don't pull the back panel, chip at ice with a knife, or aim a heat gun at plastic.

We follow the drain path all the way to the pan and clear it, and we look at the fan that moves air over the coil, since a weak fan makes frost too. Can I just defrost it and move on?
Sometimes, yes. If a door got left ajar the one time, a thaw takes care of it. But if the frost is back in a few weeks, something is failing. Defrosting it by hand over and over is a symptom, not a repair.
Why is my fridge side warm when the freezer is iced up?
On most models, the air gets cooled in the freezer and blown into the fresh food section. Thick frost blocks that airflow. Clear the ice and the fridge cools again, but the cause is still sitting there.
Is ice under the bottom drawer the same problem?
Usually not. A flat sheet of ice on the freezer floor points to a plugged defrost drain. The meltwater has nowhere to go, so it refreezes. We clear the line and find out what clogged it.
