Top-rated independent appliance repair across Appalachia
Chest and Upright Freezers
When a freezer stops holding cold, we come out, find the fault, and tell you whether it's worth fixing or worth replacing. That's the whole job. Say it's a freezer full of venison, garden corn, and a summer of berries, and now the lid is sweating and the walls feel soft when you open it. Here's how we sort out repair versus curb, in plain English.

Age matters, but not the way you'd think
A chest freezer from twenty years back can outlive a new one. The old ones are simple: a compressor, a thermostat, a lid gasket, and not much else. Fewer parts means fewer things break, and the fixes are easier. Newer uprights with frost-free coils, defrost timers, and control boards have more to go wrong, though those pieces are usually still made. What we really look at is the sealed system. If the compressor and refrigerant loop are healthy, most everything bolted around it is fair game. If the sealed system is the problem on an older unit, the math changes fast. So age alone doesn't decide it. The type of fault does.
Faults we fix most often
Bad door or lid gasket. You'll see frost building on one side, or the lid won't suck shut, and it's a straightforward swap. Failed thermostat or cold control, where the freezer runs nonstop or won't kick on at all. Defrost problems on frost-free uprights. Ice packs up behind the back wall and airflow dies, so food near the top thaws while the bottom stays rock hard. Condenser fan not turning, or coils packed with dust and pet hair. We see that a lot in garages and basements off a hollow road. Start relay and overload parts on the compressor. You hear a click, a hum, then nothing, over and over. Drain lines plugged with sediment, because our hard water leaves scale everywhere.
How we work the call at your house
First we listen. Does it hum, click, run constant, or sit silent? Then we check what's feeding it. A lot of older farmhouse garages run a freezer off one tired circuit with an extension cord, and a low or loose connection will mimic a dead compressor. We put a thermometer inside and compare the actual temperature to what the dial claims. We look at the gasket, the coils, the drain, and the frost pattern, because frost tells a story about airflow. Then we tell you what we found and what part it needs. If the part is discontinued or the sealed system is shot, we say that out loud instead of dragging it out.
When we tell you to buy a new one
Some calls end with honest bad news. A rusted-through cabinet floor on a chest freezer, where the liner has broken and the insulation is soaked, isn't worth chasing. Same with a unit that took water in a basement flood and now smells like mildew inside the foam. A dead compressor on a small, plain chest freezer often costs more in labor and parts than the box is worth to you. Discontinued control boards are another one. If nobody makes it anymore, we're not going to pretend otherwise. We'd rather you spend once than twice. Call us and we'll be straight with you.
What to do right now to save the food
Keep the lid closed. A full chest freezer holds cold for a surprising while if nobody opens it. Throw a couple of blankets over the top, but leave the vents and the back clear. If you have a cooler, move the most valuable food into it with ice. Fill the empty space in the freezer with jugs of ice or water. Unplug it and plug it back in once. If nothing happens, check the breaker and test the outlet with a lamp. Don't pull the back panel off, and don't poke at ice with a knife or screwdriver. Reach us.

Chest and Upright Freezers — fast answers
Is a chest freezer easier to repair than an upright?
Usually, yes. Chest models have fewer parts and no defrost system on most designs. Uprights with frost-free coils have more components, but those parts are common and we replace them regularly.
My freezer runs all the time but food is soft. Fixable?
Often it is. Constant running with weak cold points to a gasket leak, blocked coils, a stuck defrost part, or airflow choked by ice. Those are common repairs, not automatic replacements.
Do you work on freezers in unheated garages and outbuildings?
We do. Cold rooms cause their own trouble, since some freezers won't cycle right below a certain temperature. We'll tell you if placement is the real problem instead of a broken part.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call us or fill out the form and describe the noise, the smell, or the puddle. Brand and model help a lot. We ask a few questions so the van carries the right parts before we ever pull in.
- Step 2
We come find you
Gravel drive, creek crossing, farm lane off a county route, give us a landmark and we'll get there. We text before we head out, so nobody sits by the window all day waiting.
- Step 3
Diagnose, then repair
We open the machine, test the part, and show you what failed. You hear the plan before any work starts. Common parts ride with us, so many jobs finish on the same visit.

Why homeowners call us
- Coal-country water eats machinesHard water and iron leave scale on heaters, valves, and pumps. Dishwashers film over and washers clog. We see it every week, and we clean or replace the parts that mineral buildup actually ruins.
- Old farmhouse wiring, respectedPlenty of homes here run on two-prong outlets and panels older than the appliance. Low voltage and shared circuits cause faults that people blame on the machine. We check the power before condemning a board.
- Mike's name on the truckThis is a small workshop, not a call center. The person who answers the phone knows the tech who shows up. If something isn't right after we leave, call us and you reach us directly.
- Independent on every brandWe work on refrigerators, ranges, washers, dryers, dishwashers, and freezers from all major makers. No brand tells us what to recommend. Sometimes the honest answer is that a repair isn't worth doing.
- All major brands, gas & electricWhirlpool, Samsung, LG, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and more, as an independent repair company.
- Straight answersWhen a repair doesn't make sense, we tell you, sometimes before we even roll a truck.
