Refrigerator Not Cooling
If your fridge is running but the food inside is warm, here's what to check and when to call us. Milk tastes off, ice cream has gone to soup, and when you open the door the light comes on and the fan hums like nothing's wrong. Rough morning when you just got back from the store. Below is what that symptom usually means, what you can safely look at yourself, and where you should stop.

What "not cooling" actually tells us
A fridge doesn't make cold. It moves heat out of the box and dumps it into your kitchen. So when the inside gets warm, either the heat can't get out, the cold air can't circulate, or the sealed system quit moving refrigerant. Running but warm is a very different animal from dead silent. Silent usually points at power, a control board, or a start component. Running but warm usually points at airflow or frost. Note which one you've got before you call, because it saves us both time on the phone.
Cause family one: airflow and dust
This is the cheap end, and out here it's common. Condenser coils under or behind the fridge collect dust, pet hair, and the fine road grit that rides in off a gravel driveway. Coated coils can't shed heat. Inside the box, vents get blocked by a casserole dish shoved against the back wall or a freezer packed wall to wall. Cold air has to travel from the freezer into the fresh food section through a small duct. Block that duct and the freezer stays fine while the fridge climbs. Check both before anything else.
Cause family two: defrost and frost buildup
Behind the freezer's back wall sits the evaporator coil. It frosts up in normal use, and a heater melts that frost off on a schedule. When the defrost cycle quits, the frost turns into a solid block of ice. Air can't pass through ice, so the fresh food side warms up first. The tell is a freezer that still feels cold, a fridge that doesn't, and a fan that's gotten louder or grinds. Sometimes you get water pooling under the crisper drawers instead, because the drain line froze shut.
Cause family three: controls, door seals, and power
A door gasket that's torn or gummy lets humid room air pour in all day long. Run your hand along the seal and feel for gaps. Older farmhouse kitchens add another wrinkle. A fridge sharing a tired circuit with a microwave, or plugged into an outlet with worn wiring, gets low or intermittent voltage, and that makes a compressor struggle. Thermostats and control boards fail too, and so do the small fans. If the compressor never starts and never clicks, stop right there and call us. Start components and capacitors hold a charge, and that's not homeowner work.
Safe checks you can do right now, and what we do next
Safe stuff first. Set a thermometer in a glass of water on the middle shelf and read it. Confirm nobody bumped the temperature dial. Vacuum the visible grille at the base, then pull the fridge out a few inches for air clearance. Make sure the door closes all the way and the seal grips a dollar bill. Listen for the compressor. Don't pull interior back panels, don't touch refrigerant lines, and leave the control housing alone. When we get there we measure actual voltage at the outlet, check evaporator temperature, test the defrost circuit, and read pressures on the sealed system. That's how we know whether it's a fan or a compressor instead of guessing.
Refrigerator Not Cooling — fast answers
My freezer is still cold but the fridge is warm. Is that a different problem?
Usually yes, and it's the better news of the two. That pattern points at airflow between the two compartments, so we're looking at a blocked vent, a dead circulation fan, or an iced evaporator. The sealed system is probably fine.
Should I unplug it for a day to melt the ice?
A long defrost will often restore cooling for a while, and it does confirm ice was the problem. What it won't do is fix why the defrost cycle quit in the first place. Expect it back in a few weeks.
How long should I keep food in a fridge that isn't cooling?
Move perishables to a cooler once the interior passes about 40 degrees. Otherwise keep the door shut. A closed freezer holds safe temperatures much longer than the fresh food side does.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call us or fill out the form and describe the noise, the smell, or the puddle. Brand and model help a lot. We ask a few questions so the van carries the right parts before we ever pull in.
- Step 2
We come find you
Gravel drive, creek crossing, farm lane off a county route, give us a landmark and we'll get there. We text before we head out, so nobody sits by the window all day waiting.
- Step 3
Diagnose, then repair
We open the machine, test the part, and show you what failed. You hear the plan before any work starts. Common parts ride with us, so many jobs finish on the same visit.

Why homeowners call us
- Coal-country water eats machinesHard water and iron leave scale on heaters, valves, and pumps. Dishwashers film over and washers clog. We see it every week, and we clean or replace the parts that mineral buildup actually ruins.
- Old farmhouse wiring, respectedPlenty of homes here run on two-prong outlets and panels older than the appliance. Low voltage and shared circuits cause faults that people blame on the machine. We check the power before condemning a board.
- Mike's name on the truckThis is a small workshop, not a call center. The person who answers the phone knows the tech who shows up. If something isn't right after we leave, call us and you reach us directly.
- Independent on every brandWe work on refrigerators, ranges, washers, dryers, dishwashers, and freezers from all major makers. No brand tells us what to recommend. Sometimes the honest answer is that a repair isn't worth doing.
- All major brands, gas & electricWhirlpool, Samsung, LG, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and more, as an independent repair company.
- Straight answersWhen a repair doesn't make sense, we tell you, sometimes before we even roll a truck.
